Punk rock originated as a reaction to bland rock bands of the 1970s. It has experienced a revival due to the homogenized sound of 90's "alternative" rock. Many fans of punk do not know that it also has roots in fashion, through Malcolm McLaren's involvement with clothing designer Vivienne Westwood. After opening a clothing store in the UK's Chelsea district, McLaren would soon manage both the Sex Pistols and later the New York Dolls.
